Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body. It is essential for energy production, protein synthesis, muscle function, and nervous system regulation. Why form matters: glycinate vs. oxide

Not all magnesium supplements are equivalent. The most common form — magnesium oxide — has notoriously poor bioavailability (~4%). Most of it passes through the gut unabsorbed, which is why it's primarily used as a laxative.

Magnesium glycinate is a chelated form — magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. This dramatically improves absorption (estimated at 80%+) and adds a second benefit: glycine itself has been shown in clinical trials to improve sleep quality and reduce daytime sleepiness through its own NMDA receptor modulating effects.
